When a crew of porn purveyors is annihilated at a mansion, the police force gets the queasy feeling that someone is doing their job for them, too well. Discovering the identity of the law-and-order culprits proves tricky as FBI agent Matt Cooper (Michael Rooker) and Police Detective Helen Simms (Diane DiLascio) lock horns over proper procedure. Matters get complicated when a surveillance tape implicates rogue cops in those porn-a-cides, only to be downplayed as circumstantial evidence. After Simms and Cooper bury the hatchet, they target a right-wing policeman named MacIlroy (Robert Patrick). Cooper tries uncover the conspiracy without making MacIroy suspicious; instead, MacIlroy outwits Cooper, seizes control of a courtroom, and guns down a liberal judge and three lawyers. And now Cooper and Simms are next. Who would have thought that the routine thriller STAR CHAMBER would now seem like a masterpiece of vigilante cinema? In an era where everyone's used to headlines about police misconduct, this script suffers from routine police procedural sequences and de rigeur sexual tension between the two leads. Typically, of course, the production is guilty of embracing the very attitudes purports to condemn. In the movie's most chilling segment, the pragmatic MacIlroy slays two fellow officers when they stumble upon one of his illegal raids. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
