A biting look at the involvement of a veteran police officer, played by Taylor, with an underworld gang led by Raft. With payoffs from Raft, Taylor is able to live luxuriously. Taylor's kid brother, Forrest, is a rookie on the force who is determined to infuse his position with integrity. When he witnesses a mob hit he refuses to appease Raft by covering it up. Raft calls upon Taylor to persuade Forrest to stay quiet by offering him a $15,000 bribe. Forrest still upholds his morals. Taylor tries to reach Forrest through his girl friend, Leigh, but that also proves unsuccessful. Impatient with Forrest's obstinacy, Raft hires an out-of-town hit man, Edwards, to silence Forrest permanently. Upon hearing the news of his brother's murder, Taylor becomes enraged and vows to seek revenge. Enlisting the aid of fellow officer Ellenstein (a Jew, castigated by his anti-Semitic coworkers), Tayor hunts down Edwards and, finally, Raft. In a frenzy of gunshots Raft is killed and Taylor seriously injured. Taylor is loaded into an ambulance, having restored his integrity but still facing the possibility of a jail term. One of only a handful of films noir to emerge from MGM, ROGUE COP works chiefly because of Taylor's fine performance. While the "blood is thicker than money" theme is rather commonplace and predictable, Taylor manages to pull it off convincingly. As compelling as ROGUE COP is, it is simply a variation on the previous year's THE BIG HEAT--both derived from novels written by McGivern. In both cases a cop (where Taylor is easily corrupted, THE BIG HEAT's Glenn Ford is solidly incorruptible) is driven to vengeance after the murder of a loved one (for Taylor it's a brother, and for Ford a wife), busting open a corrupt organization (Taylor cracks the mob, Ford shakes up the police department) in the process. Unlike THE BIG HEAT, ROGUE COP didn't have Fritz Lang's brilliant directorial hand to make it all click. Seitz's cinematography earned an Oscar nomination. leave a comment
