Lancaster stars as a 77-year-old patriarch whose children and grandchildren come to visit him on his birthday at his coastal Long Island estate. A once-blacklisted writer, Lancaster spends his days thinking back on his youth and the events of his life. Arriving for the visit is his single daughter (Amis), a promiscuous young woman who sleeps with whomever she finds; his Hollywood filmmaker son (Glover), who is never seen without his portable phone; his eldest daughter and her washed-up major league pitcher husband (Clarkson and Pullman); another daughter and her unfunny comedian husband (Conroy and Spacey); and a collection of small-fries (including, in his film debut, little Macaulay Culkin, whose career would skyrocket in 1990 with the runaway success of HOME ALONE). Lancaster captures the children's attention when he tells them of an ancient Viking belief that a man can achieve immortality if his corpse is placed on a seafaring ship which is then set afire, a tale the children take a little too seriously. A hold-over at Columbia Pictures from the days of David Puttnam's reign, ROCKET GIBRALTAR received only a token theatrical release, which was for the best as the film, despite its solid cast, is a rather dull effort. leave a comment
