Bennett plays a Broadway performer whose career topples when news leaks out that she is the mistress of a corrupt politician. She loses her child, but then regains her stature on the stage. She falls in love with playwright McCrea, though this romance is cut short when his wife gives birth. RKO exec David O. Selznick took the heat for this box-office flop. After the film was previewed the response was so venomous that director George Fitzmaurice was replaced, as was lead Phillips Holmes. George Cukor and McCrea were then called in for two weeks of retakes. It didn't help much.
