Supernova Says Nay to Z

Zayra Alvarez, Rock Star: Supernova

Last Wednesday's edition of CBS' Rock Star: Supernova featured a first — Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke and Jason Newsted in the nascent band's first live performance ever, fronted, in at least this one instance, by Dilana — as well as a last, in a swan song from Zayra Alvarez, who has been sent packing. TVGuide.com spoke to Zayra read more

Rock Star's Josh and Jill Sing Swan Song

Josh Logan and Jill Gioia, Rock Star: Supernova

Last week on CBS' Rock Star: Supernova (Tuesday at 9/Wednesday at 8 pm/ET), Tommy Lee sent the hatchet swinging not once but twice, eliminating both Jill Gioia and Josh Logan from the competition — not exactly a huge shock since both had been in the bottom three before. But while the two were sent home together, they've got little else in common as TVGuide.com caught up with the excitable Jill and the mellow Josh to find out what they thought of their read more

Rock Star's Dana Isn't Forever Young

Dana Andrews, Rock Star: Supernova

CBS' Rock Star: Supernova (Tuesdays at 9 pm/Wednesdays at 8 pm/ET) sent its youngest contestant, Dana Andrews, home last week as the band, and many of her housemates, questioned the 22-year-old sweet young thing's ability to brave the road with hard-rockin' (and -livin') Gilby, Tommy and Jason. Still, she remains positive about h read more

Can you tell me why there are ...

Question: Can you tell me why there are so many talent-based shows this summer? Especially on Wednesdays. I looked in the listings sections, and there are at least four talent shows at 8 pm/ET on Wednesday. Don't people know that if they shove the same thing down our throats, we'll eventually get tired of it? I say we cut it back to only one show on Wednesdays at 8: So You Think You Can Dance. What's your take on this phenomenon? Answer: It is ridiculous, isn't it? But cloning comes naturally to the networks. Look at the glut of procedural dramas. Think back to all of the Friends knockoffs. If something works, all of the networks want to get in the game, innovation and creativity be damned. And nothing works on a grander scale than American Idol, so why be surprised when a tidal wave of amateur-hour talent contests invades the lineup, especially in the summer? It's almost comical when you see Dance go up against America's Got Talent, Rock Star: Supernova and now The One, all on the same ... read more

Brooke Burke: Rockin' Gal, Rockin' Q&A

Rock Star: Supernova host Brooke Burke

The competition is heating up on CBS' Rock Star: Supernova (Tuesdays at 9/Wednesdays at 8 pm/ET), and it's in large part due to the Dionysian dames vying for dibs on joining the new group founded by Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke. Might a gal actually grab the Season 2 prize? Catching up with cohost Brooke Burke at a mock protest rally on behalf of NoScruf.org (a Gillette promotional event), TVGuide.com asked the brunette beauty about the lady Rockers' chances, her own Wild partying days and what it's like to be dressed by a paintbrush.

TVGuide.com: As you can see, I purposely shaved this morning in preparation for interviewing you.

What do you think about the ...

Question: What do you think about the new season of Rock Star? I was surprised how good the first week was. Last season it took the singers a few weeks to start sounding good, but this season it seems like just about every one of them has the potential to win, especially some of the very talented female singers. I'm glad I've finally been able to find some quality summer viewing not on cable! Answer: And how refreshing that they spared us those insipid and humiliating audition episodes by jumping right into the competition. I agree: The first week's performances, especially from the women, blew me away. Unlike American Idol, which props up icky losers like Kevin Covais way past his expiration date, the cast of Rock Star all seem to deserve to be there. The eliminations are going to be excruciating a little further down the line, because these people almost all have star potential. Because I'm on the West Coast for the next few weeks, covering the TCA Press Tour and focusing on the ... read more

When does the new season of ...

Question: When does the new season of Rock Star start? I have been looking everywhere!
Answer: Well, apparently you didn't look at our Summer TV Preview issue of TV Guide. Tsk-tsk. Look for the second season to premiere on CBS July 7. This time, with Rock Star: Supernova, the search is on for a lead singer for the newly formed Supernova, which consists of Motley Crue's Tommy Lee, Metallica's Jason Newsted and Guns N' Roses' Gilby Clarke. Let the headbanging begin ... read more

Idol's Chris Has Left the Building

Chris Daughtry, American Idol

So much for Elvis' plea that people don't be cruel. That look you saw on Chris Daughtry's face at the end of last week's American Idol results show vividly sums up the front-runner's take on his surprising fate. "[My jaw] was pretty much on the floor," he told TVGuide.com the day after his ouster] He later used such words as "bummed," "disappointed," "shocked" and "speechless" to describe his reaction to the "gut-wrenching moment" he anticipated "not even a little bit."  Few predicted the outcome, including his bottom-two companion as well as Idol's judging triad. "[Katharine] and I didn't get a chance to talk after, so I don't really know what was going read more

Being one of the seven people ...

Question: Being one of the seven people who watched Rock Star: INXS on CBS last summer, I was excited to see a mention in your column a few weeks ago that there would be a second season. I haven't been able to find out anything else about it. So what do you know? Will INXS kill off that jackass JD and try again? Or will it be a new band with a dead lead singer? Will it be worth watching without Marty and Jordis? I and the other six people who watched last summer wanna know!
Answer: I only know CBS is gearing up for a second season, but as far as I'm aware, they've revealed nothing yet about the format or the end prize for the winner. They're probably saving that info for closer to the launch of the summer season ... read more
