Somebody's (screenwriters Herbert Margolis' and William Raynor's?) idea of a rock 'n' roll picture, ROCK, PRETTY BABY sought to capitalize on the booming American youth culture of the 50s and its infatuation with pop music. John Saxon stars as Jimmy Daley, a high-school senior who, against his physician father's wishes, puts together a band with drummer Angelo Barrato (Sal Mineo) and bass player "Ox" Bentley (poet Rod McKuen) rather than becoming the medical student dad wants him to be. As if this generational clash weren't enough, the band has further trouble when a performance turns into a riot and Jimmy has to pawn his six-string to pay for the damage. The pseudo-rock rhythms provided by Henry Mancini, and Bobby Troup, among others, are without much spark, but ROCK, PRETTY BABY is notable for the appearances of Fay Wray as Jimmy's mother and Shelley Fabares as his sister, Twinkey. Songs include "Rock, Pretty Baby," "What's It Gonna Be," "Rockabye Lullaby Blues," "Picnic By the Sea" (Bobby Troup). SUMMER LOVE (1958) was a sequel. leave a comment
