The rock 'n' roll movie. Producer Sam Katzman and director Fred Sears again pooled their exploitative talents to deliver a film not so much about rock 'n' roll, but a film that was rock 'n' roll. The story is barely evident--legendary rock deejay Alan Freed discovers Bill Haley and the Comets in a mountain village and brings them back to New York, where they quickly become a musical phenomenon. Katzman was correct in assuming that if rock concerts could cause youth riots, so could a movie. In England, soon after a couple of screenings, young rockers were tearing up the seats and dancing up a storm. Of course all their moms and dads were bowled over with shock and banned the film from the theaters. Even now it can still make the feet move to the beat. Haley's tunes include "Razzle Dazzle," "Happy Baby," "See You Later, Alligator," "Rudy's Rock," and the greatest rocker of them all "Rock around the Clock." And then there's "The Great Pretender," "Only You" (The Platters), "Codfish and Potatoes," "Sad and Lonely," "Cuero," "Mambo Capri" (Tony Martinez), and "Giddy Up, Ding Dong," "We're Gonna Teach You to Rock" (Freddie Bell). leave a comment
