A Hollywood apotheosis of skirling pipes, swirling kilts, and knobby knees. The thinking person's hulking brute, Liam Neeson, plays the title character, an 18th-century Scottish Highlander pitted against venal English landlords and psychotic hired sabre Tim Roth. ROB ROY succeeds more as
an old-fashioned romance (nice to see Jessica Lange, instead of some
babe du jour, as Rob's fiercely proud wife), than as an action epic; there's not much in the way of BRAVEHEART-style flying viscera, though the salty, ribald dialogue, courtesy of veteran screenwriter Alan Sharp (ULZANA'S RAID),
is not really for the kiddies.
