Financed by Tipi Hedren and husband Noel Marshall, this family affair follows Hedren and her real-life children to Africa (actually sunny Soledad Canyon, California) to meet Marshall, a scientist who lives among wild beasts. Because of a mix-up, they are greeted not by Marshall but by several big, hungry cats with big teeth. Marshall wrote, directed, and produced this $17-million adventure tale--which was 11 years in the making and which required the filmmaking family to mortgage their belongings to finance it. Plagued by fire, flood, and a disease that wiped out a number of the cats, this combination of THE BIRDS and BORN FREE ended up a big-budget nightmare, taking in only $2 million worldwide. leave a comment
