1945, Movie, NR, 90 mins

This addition to the "Road" series is told in flashback, as a wealthy couple, Chester Hooton (Bob Hope) and Sal Van Hoyden (Dorothy Lamour), recall how they got rich. They'd gained control of a Klondike gold mine but lost their best friend, Duke Johnson (Bing Crosby), in the process. While they reminisce, he suddenly pops in, very much alive. The three begin to talk about the old days, and the film goes back in time to show Chester and Duke as a couple of failed vaudevillians who try to make a shady deal in San Francisco and then must flee the city. They board a northbound ship and purloin the deed to a gold mine in Alaska from a pair of vicious murderers. Considering this theft and the fact that they are running from the cops, the vaudevillians pretend to be the tough guys they just scammed. But, in keeping with tradition, the duo get in deep trouble and find themselves vying for the affections of Sal before the final credits roll. Lots of excellent gags punctuate the story, including one in which Hope and Crosby are in the boiler room of the steamer when a formally dressed gentleman walks in looking for a match. Hope and Crosby want to know if he's supposed to be in the movie, and the man replies with a shrug, "Nope, I'm taking a shortcut to stage 10." Once again, animals talk, sight gags abound, and the complementing temperaments of Hope and Crosby are mined to great advantage. leave a comment
