Road, Movie -- Vishnu, a young man driven by wanderlust, escapes his father's faltering hair oil business. An old truck beckons, which Vishnu sees as his ticket to freedom. He offers to drive the antique Chevy across the desert to the sea, where it has been sold to a local museum. As he sets off across the harsh terrain, he discovers he s not merely transporting a battered vehicle, but an old touring cinema. Along the way, Vishnu reluctantly picks up a young runaway, a garrulous old entertainer and a striking gypsy woman. Together they roam the barren land, searching for water and an elusive fair. The journey turns dire when they are waylaid by corrupt cops and a notorious waterlord. The key to their freedom is the eccentric collection of films and the two forty-year-old film projectors in the back of the truck. As in 1001 Nights, if the films are good, they live and move on. If the films are boring, they face death in the outback. The journey proves transformative for each of the travelers, but especially for Vishnu who discovers life, love and laughter on the Indian highway.

Interview with Dev Benegal, the director of Road, Movie, who discussed the film while at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Presented on six double-sided walls and comprised of a series of short films, Elle Flanders and Tamira Sawatzky s powerful and beautifully nuanced installation, Road Movie, examines contemporary life in Palestine. Residents of the West Bank are confronted with a segregated and impossible road system made all the more problematic and unpredictable by shifting political currents. The subjects of the films from Palestinian ambulance and taxi drivers to Israeli settlers and human-rights activists (who were all filmed while Flan- ders and Sawatzky travelled the segregated roads) offer a unique and unconventional glimpse into the human landscape of this volatile land. Filmed in stop-motion animation, with a screen set-up suggesting the foreboding wall surrounding Palestine, Road Movie is full of arresting and vibrant images, from the deserts of the Jordan Valley to the circumference of Jerusalem. The piece serves as an elegy for people and places that are rarely seen or heard. And for those who no longer see one another.

We meet young Vishnu (Abhay Deol) as he is being prepped to take over the family hair-oil business. Embarrassed by this prospect, Vishnu jumps at the chance to drive his uncle's beat-up Chevy truck across India to its new owner. Sweeping across India's vast landscapes with projectors in tow, Road, Movie embraces two of cinema's greatest pleasures the open road and the love of movies for their own glorious sake. Powered by the same desire to venture into unknown territory that inspires so many road stories, Dev Benegal's new feature has the distinct advantage of terrain and characters too rarely seen onscreen. Young and passionate but without direction, Vishnu (Abhay Deol) runs the risk of falling into the family business. Unfortunately, his family sells a hair oil he finds distinctly embarrassing, especially as he watches his father hawk the Atma Hair Potion to vendors with humiliating enthusiasm. And so Vishnu hits the road, finding a battered old truck as if by fate. Years ago it must have been a spectacular vehicle, ferrying projectors and an eclectic collection of films from village to town across Rajasthan. Now it barely sputters to life. But Vishnu, driven by wanderlust and a need to escape his fate back home, coaxes the green rattletrap along the highway, picking up passengers as he goes a young runaway, a garrulous entertainer, a beautiful woman and, of course, a few corrupt villains.
