Riptide: Review
Shearer plays a carefree American who has a child after an affair with Marshall, an English lord. The two marry and their future seems blissful. Marshall goes off on a business trip to America, leaving his wife behind with nothing to do. Shearer is soon bored and attends a swanky party where she bumps into an old flame, Montgomery. At one time Montgomery's playboy personality had quelled any hopes of marriage between the two but their reunion fires up some old passions. He makes an unsuccessful pass at Shearer, then follows her home in a drunken stupor. Montgomery climbs up Shearer's terrace in his efforts to renew his love and ends up taking a bad fall. He is taken to the hospital which results in some scandalous press for both Montgomery and Shearer. When Marshall returns home he is incensed at the accounts of his wife's would-be affair. Though Shearer tries to explain what really happened, Marshall refuses to listen. Convinced his wife has been dallying with Montgomery behind his back, Marshall decides to separate from Shearer. This leaves her free to pursue other men and she quickly finds herself in Montgomery's arms. Marshall comes to his senses and tries to win back his wife but upon discovering she has been secretly carrying on with Montgomery, he goes ahead with the divorce proceedings. Before the legal work is completed, however, Marshall and Shearer realize how much they really do love each other and decide to remain together after all. Yet another story of infidelity among the wealthy, this soap opera works well thanks to the sincerity of its cast. Shearer's first film in a year and a half, RIP TIDE was produced by her husband, Thalberg. The famed producer had recently recovered from the ill health that had plagued him since childhood and was eager to work again with his wife. This had all the earmarks of a good Thalberg production with its entertaining qualities and intelligent approach to the material. RIP TIDE also marked the Hollywood debut for English actress Campbell, whose eccentricity had put off a number of important people. Studio executives did the best they could in weeding out what they considered a grave hiring mistake by giving Campbell small cameo roles starting with this film. Eventually Campbell caught on but was reassured by director Goulding in a telegram which read ". . . you are being put on the screen with all the charm and technique that made you . . . Relax, trust, don't worry, sleep well, feel well and give me your confidence." The actress more or less sealed her own coffin later while dining with Thalberg and Shearer to discuss future parts. In her book
An Unfinished Woman
Campbell's friend Lillian Hellman recounted Campbell's compliment to Thalberg on Shearer's eyes. "Your wife has the most beautiful little eyes I've ever seen," gushed the actress, not realizing that both husband and wife were highly sensitive about Shearer's unfortunate squint.
