The search for a shipment of stolen rifles leads to the home of Boone, a sadistic Indian hater who is arrested by officer Whitman because he won't disclose where he obtained his rifle. After a brief stay in the Union prison with Mexican bandit Franciosa, Boone agrees to help Whitman uncover the stolen rifles. As it turns out, they were stolen by a Confederate officer, O'Brien, who wants to rekindle the Civil War by selling the guns to Apaches, who will then lay siege to the Union soldiers. Four men--Whitman, Boone, Franciosa, and Brown (in his first screen appearance)--go after O'Brien. They find him in a camp as he is about to turn the rifles over to the Indians. Brown's heroic effort blows apart the camp and just about everything else. Superb characterizations--especially by Boone, who is as venomous and bitter as they come--make this a western with power. The Monument Valley locations are nice background. leave a comment
