Film depiction of the autobiography of Maxwell, focused on his adventures with a playful otter. The semidocumentary flavor was heightened by the presence of Travers and McKenna (then recently of BORN FREE fame, another animal story). Travers plays an increasingly distraught London clerk who decides to purchase the otter he sees in the pet shop that he passes every day on his way to work. When the otter's antics get him evicted from his apartment, Travers takes to the Scottish Highlands, intending to devote himself to writing about Arabia; but the otter, whom he names Mij, takes up a great deal of Travers's attention, and he's unable to spend much time writing. When Travers leaves Mij in the local veterinarian's care while he returns to London for a business trip, Mij is killed in a road accident. Despite this depressing news, Travers takes solace in the appearance of a female otter and her three cubs, spotted near Mij and Travers's favorite hangout. Travers is convinced that they must be Mij's family and decides to write about his experiences with his otter. The lush photography of the Scottish Highlands provides a pleasant background to this delightful and moving tale. leave a comment
