Clive and Brent are brothers. The former has been injured and now lies in bed, a hopeless invalid. His wife, Hutchinson, can't live with this and has an affair with Brent. Finally Clive dies, but his nurse (Wood), who secretly loved Clive, suspects that this was a mercy killing. Clive overacts outrageously in this version of the play by Maugham.
