This tragic romance features Harlow with a brown wig in place of her trademark platinum blond hair and in the role of a fisherman's daughter who works in a tuna cannery. She falls in love with Tracy, a big-headed fisherman who leads his fellow workers in a strike at the urging of Hurst, a rabble-rouser who is really a stooge for cannery owner Calleia. Calleia benefits from the strike, while the fishermen lose out. Tracy is kicked out of the union and, distressed, leaves his waterfront home and new wife Harlow. Later, Harlow receives word that Tracy is penniless and sickly. She begs Calleia for money and when he refuses she decides to steal it. Tracy is too proud to accept her offering, so she gives the money to Hurst, who promises to deliver it to her husband. Hurst keeps the money for himself, however, and Harlow winds up in prison. When Tracy discovers what she's done he roughs up Hurst and rushes to the prison, where, unknown to Tracy, Harlow has given birth to a child. Having returned to the waterfront, Tracy gets back into the good graces of Calleia by preventing Hurst from carrying out a plot to sabotage the tuna ships. Hearing of the sabotage attempt, Harlow mistakenly assumes that Tracy has been injured and escapes from prison to be at his side. After finding him healthy, she agrees to finish her jail term. Tracy, in return, promises to await her release and the family life that will follow. While not Tracy's or Harlow's most remembered film, RIFF-RAFF provides a fine waterfront locale as well as some snappy, hard-boiled dialog penned by two of Hollywood's top women writers, Marion and Loos, with help from Hanemann. Although saddled with a basically unlikable character, Tracy skillfully tackles his role and manages to keep the audience in sympathy throughout. leave a comment
