1950, Movie, NR, 112 mins

Frank Capra directed both BROADWAY BILL and its remake, RIDING HIGH, and the 1950 film is one of the rare instances in which the remake is as good as the original. BROADWAY BILL stars Myrna Loy and Warner Baxter are replaced here by Coleen Gray and Bing Crosby, who, not surprisingly, contributes a few tunes to the proceedings. Dan Brooks (Crosby) is devoted to both a racehorse and to wealthy meal ticket Alice Higgins (Gray), whose jealousy of the quadruped forces Dan to choose between them. Naturally, he chooses the horse, who repays his love by winning the big race and making Dan rich, then dying. One-time heavyweight champion Max Baer makes a cameo appearance as the man with whom Alice seeks solace; Oliver Hardy, in a rare Laurel-less appearance, also does a brief bit. leave a comment
