Ride A Wild Pony

1976, Movie, G, 90 mins

A typical Disney affair with beautiful location work in the Australian outback. A wild pony causes two children--one (Bettles) the son of a poor farmer, the other a disabled rich girl (Griffith)--to fight over its ownership. Though Griffith is introduced in the most maudlin fashion possible, she makes much of the role, giving the best performance in the film. The story culminates with Bettles as the rightful owner of the pony, but along the way he and Griffith have learned a few things about love, selfishness, and sharing. The message is presented in a refeshingly non-preachy fashion that encourages the intended child audience to actively involve itself in moral judgments. Unfortunately, after Griffith's wonderful, stereotype-breaking role (a marvelous debut for a child as well), the rest of the performances are quite standard and often seem as flat as cardboard cutouts. However this is a good film for the younger set. Unlike many children's films, it gives the audience something to think about. leave a comment
