Dorothy Hughes' excellent pulp novel gets top-notch treatment, thanks mostly to Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer's solid screenply and admirable direction from its star, Robert Montgomery. He plays a rather moral blackmailer who arrives in a small New Mexico town with a canceled check linking crime boss Fred Clark to illegal profits.
