A runaway bank robber (Murphy) enters the western town of Little Rock. There a local judge (Matthau) mistakes the newcomer for the marshal whom the town is awaiting. Of course Murphy plays along and finds that his new role wins him admiration and respect. Scala is a Creole who serves as
the love interest. This has all been done before, and much more refreshingly. Matthau has a few good comic moments in his drunken caricature. Otherwise this is a slow-moving affair with only a few moments of interest. The color photography manages to make some use of the gorgeous scenery.
