Ricochet Romance

1954, Movie, NR, 80 mins

The popular homespun "Ma and Pa Kettle" series brought Main much success. When Percy Kilbride left the series, Ma Kettle was forced to go solo. Here Main plays a clone of her old role, a well-meaning woman of simple ways. She arrives at a dude ranch owned by Wills to become the replacement cook for the mostly unhappy guests. Wills prefers playing magic tricks to running his ranch. Gonzalez-Gonzalez and Bedoya are a pair of comical Mexican employees (in what plays as a racist portrayal by today's standards) and Vallee is a rich guest who becomes enamoured of Main's good cooking. The plot is ultra-thin, merely a frame to hang some mild slapstick routines on. This film is little different from Main's other amiable comedies. Songs include "Ricochet Romance" (Larry Coleman, Jr., Joe Darion, sung by Bedoya), "Las Altenitas," "Para Vigo Me Voy," and "Un Tequila" (Ernesto Lecuona, Arturo G. Gonzales, sung by the Guadalajara Trio). leave a comment
