MGM spun out musicals like cotton candy: sweet, enjoyable, and pure fluff. This one features Powell as a young girl from Texas visiting Paris with her rancher father, Corey. And what's a visit to gay Paree without amour? This comes in the form of Damone, who naturally turns out to be the man Powell has been dreaming of. Also encountered is Darrieux, the independent woman who ran off to Europe after giving birth to Powell. Powell doesn't know that this woman is her mother and her father's ex-wife. Lamas plays Darrieux's heartthrob. As is the custom with these musicals, there's a variety of solos and duets, penned here by the talented team of Sammy Cahn and Nicholas Brodszky, including "Dark Is the Night," "L'Amour Toujours, Tonight for Sure" (sung by Darrieux), "Wonder Why," "I Can See You" (sung by Damone, Powell), "Paris" (sung by Powell, reprised by Lamas), "We Never Talk Much" (sung by Darrieux, Lamas, reprised by Damone, Powell), "How Do You Like Your Eggs in the Morning?" (sung by Damone, Powell, the Four Freshmen). Other songs include "There's Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie" (Jack Meskill, Pete Wendling, sung by Darrieux), "The Old Piano Roll Blues" (Cy Coben, sung by Powell, Damone, Lamas), and "Deep in the Heart of Texas" (June Hershey, Don Swander). Damone and Powell's enjoyable number "Wonder Why" received an Acadamy Award nomination for best song. The script was cowritten by Sidney Sheldon, who later produced a number of television sitcoms (such as "I Dream of Jeannie") in addition to writing some delightfully trashy novels. leave a comment
