This clever story is a look through the eyes of a child at a divorce in an upper-class New York family. Alvarado plays the 12-year-old daughter of Walker and Lithgow, whose marriage is on its last legs. Alvarado knows that the blow is coming and can only wait for the final showdown. Levy plays the brainy friend whose family has already gone through a breakup. An old hand at this stuff, he coaches Alvarado as she copes with the emotional trauma, emphasizing the freedom he has achieved as a result of his parents' split. Maintaining a sense of humor toward its touchy subject, the film is a refreshing look at those people--the children--who are the real victims of divorce, but who are seldom given a voice in the matter. The young actors give convincing performances (although Levy is perhaps a little too smug), and are handled effectively through the well-paced direction of Young. leave a comment
