Essentially a saccharine soap opera, RHAPSODY is saved by some fabulous European locations, lushly romantic concertos, and above all else, a superb performance by a 21-year-old Taylor. She stars as a rich girl with an insatiable desire to be needed by men, especially young violinist Gassman. He loves Taylor but not as much as he loves his music. Unable to compete with his devotion and strict discipline, she leaves him and becomes involved with pianist Ericson. In the meantime, Gassman rises to fame. Taylor marries Ericson but soon realizes that it is Gassman that she loves. Ericson, who needs Taylor as much as she needs Gassman, takes refuge in an alcohol-induced stupor as his wife runs off to Paris with the violinist. Gassman, however, is angered at her treatment of a fellow musician and turns her away. Determined to disprove Gassman's theories about her, Taylor returns to Ericson in Zurich and forces him to continue practicing. Then comes Ericson's big concert--a performance of Rachmaninoff's "Second Piano Concerto in C Minor" (played by Claudio Arrau). Gassman is in attendance with the notion of taking Taylor back--a notion that she is pleased with and that Ericson is aware of. After Ericson's virtuoso performance, however, she decides that she belongs with the pianist, not the violinist. Based on a 1908 novel by Australian author Richardson that ends in suicide for the pianist, RHAPSODY had been kicked around Hollywood for a few years. In 1948 Hal Wallis bought the rights and sold them to Paramount three years later. The Goetzes' script was given to Vidor to direct, but a year later Paramount sold the script and Vidor's services to MGM, where it was rewritten by the Kanins. Besides Rachmaninoff, RHAPSODY includes Tchaikovsky's "Violin Concerto in D Major"(played by Michael Rabin) and Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody." leave a comment
