Adapted from macho writer Jim Harrison's novella, this stylish exercise in sweaty retribution begins with retiring Navy pilot Cochran (Kevin Costner) going to Mexico to visit his old friend, Tiburon (Anthony Quinn). Tiburon — Tibey to his friends — is rich, powerful, corrupt and enamored of his an enchanting young wife, Miryea (Madeleine Stowe), whose beauty causes the visiting American's unwilling head to turn. Disinclined to tempt fate, Cochran ignores Miryea, which only makes her more interested; she pursues him relentlesslt even though Tibey's thugs are everywhere, his estate is a nest of prying eyes and he has a lethal temper. Cochran finally succumbs to Miryea's all-too-palpable charms, and Tibey and his goons burst in on the adulterous couple during a weekend getaway; they kill Cochran's faithful dog, beat him to a bloody pulp and put Miryea's fair features to the knife. The hideaway is torched and Cochran is dumped on the road to die, a feast for the fire ants and buzzards. Miryea, doped up with heroin, is dispatched to a brothel. Tibey's revenge is complete; Cochran's, has yet to begin. Nursed back to health by a kindly campesino, he resolves to settle scores with his former friend and to find out what's happened to Miryea. If films were medieval paintings, director Tony Scott would be known as the Master of the Billowing Draperies. Unfortunately, his decorative agenda differs from executive producer-star Costner's macho one and while their don't precisely clash, they also don't work together. Though the film gets off to an indifferent start, bogged down by too many talking heads, by the time Cochran plunges headlong into corruption, Scott is operating at something like full throttle. Fancy lighting, sweaty colors, lurid amber filters — it's the best work he's ever done, and for a few delirious stretches the film blossoms like a desert plant after a healthy rain.
