A hybrid of music video and feature film, RETURN TO WATERLOO marks the strong directorial debut of singer-songwriter Ray Davies, leader of the legendary British rock 'n'roll band the Kinks for more than 20 years. As he has done so many times in his music, Davies again takes on the decline of empire and the passivity of the middle class as he follows an unnamed, silent suburban commuter (Ken Colley) on his morning train journey to the title station. The Traveler may or may not be a wanted rapist; occasional flashes of him entering a room where a semiclad woman dries her hair and turns in surprise seem to add to this possibility.
