Still grieving over the death of his child, burnt-out police detective John Prudhomme (Christopher Lambert) is summoned to investigate a murder in which the victim was dismembered alive. After scrutinizing the message scrawled in blood at the crime scene, Prudhomme and his partner Andrew Hollingsworth (Leland Orser) slowly begin developing a theory: a religious fanatic is removing body parts from victims bearing biblical names. During a subsequent chase scene, the crafty psycho incapacitates Hollingsworth and outfits him in his own clothes. As a result, a fellow officer shoots and wounds Hollingsworth so badly that doctors amputate his leg, which is later stolen from the hospital by — guess who? Undaunted by this setback, Prudhomme deduces that the elusive madman plans to rebuild the body of Christ with his collection of limbs, etc. What's worse, this Holy Frankenstein lacks only one vital part: a baby's heart. Raising the cinematic bar set by SEVEN, this grisly psychological thriller teems with viscera, spurting blood, and plenty of body parts. It's a new subgenre: the Autopsy Chiller. Unfortunately, the movie focuses more on its antihero's tepid neuroses than the demented killer's motives, which are given decidedly short shrift; despite the veneer of religious fanaticism, he's really just interested in population control. Although the script's delineation of the psycho's gameplan generates morbid interest, our involvement in this truly bizarre manhunt is mitigated by Lambert's dull presence and by the fact that keen viewers, unlike the cops, will spot the murderer's bogus identity. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
