A Russian version of Leo Tolstoy's story and much better than the American version made in 1931. A young woman is on trial for murder, and on the jury is a young prince who recognizes her from a joyous summer he spent with her 10 years before. After getting her pregnant, he went back to
his career and left her in the care of his aunts, who shipped her away because she was pregnant. Her child did not live long, and the girl entered the hard, cold world of prostitution. The jury at the trial sentences her to four years of hard labor, but the prince uses his powers to appeal the
decision. He proposes marriage, but she turns him away, blaming him for her troubled past....
