Restraining Order

A disciple of the anything-for-an acquittal philosophy, high-priced defense attorney Robert Woodfield (Eric Roberts) comes to rue his modus operandi. After witnessing the shooting of his restaurateur pal Jerry (Steve Franken), Woodfield discovers that the perp is Martin Ritter (Hannes Jaenicke), the killer he's just successfully defended. Jerry's murder is just the latest casualty in a property-snatching scheme involving acquisitive South Koreans and influential American citizens; Ritter is the front man for a series of lethal transactions. Way over his head, Woodfield covertly plans to incriminate Ritter without openly breaking attorney-client privilege. However, Woodfield is unprepared when Ritter's boss — with plenty of friends in high places — frames Woodfield's wife for the slaying of a prosecutor and his wife. Minimal suspense and maximum action are squeezed out of this vigilante potboiler, but it does jazz up the standard machismo with a few unforeseen plot twists, like a potential hit on Mrs. Woodfield inside her jail cell. Driving on a half tank of excitement, the script still generates some nerve-wracking moments regarding the seemingly airtight case against Woodfield's wife. And because the conspirators comport themselves as if they mean business, the notion that the true villain is our flawed legal system is duly noted. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
