A ribald, refreshingly jaundiced take on Hollywood's costume genre, wittily helmed by Michael Hoffman (SOAPDISH). Robert Downey Jr. is 17th-century doctor Robert Merivel, a well-intentioned innocent who finds himself swept up in the bustling pageantry and sexual intrigue for which the court of Charles II remains notorious. When King Charles (winningly played by Sam Neill) marries off a difficult mistress (Polly Walker) to Merivel, the doctor commits an indelicate social error by falling in love. Based on Rose Tremain's much-praised novel, RESTORATION is a lovingly detailed, richly appointed historical romance that sticks surprisingly close to the facts without ever taking itself too seriously. Any resemblance between the film's characters and certain wayward royals of the present day is, we're certain, entirely coincidental. leave a comment
