An unhappy man takes his family to a cheap resort and consequently has a miserable time. On paper it looks like a bad idea for a comedy, but on film it looks even worse. Grodin is a Chicago furniture salesman who takes his wife (Rose), daughter (Mullally), and sons (Ames and Nemes) to Club Sand, a sort of bargain-basement Club Med, in hopes of lifting their sagging Christmas spirits. Grodin grows increasingly unhappy as he watches his family disintegrate around him. Then, while foraging through some nearby woods, he accidentally stumbles onto a band of guerrillas. This is an excruciatingly unfunny comedy that depends almost entirely on Grodin's humiliation to carry the flimsy premise. Normally a good comic actor, Grodin creates a character that maintains a perpetual state of whining. The supporting cast isn't any better, a harmoniously unfunny group throughout. Buzby, making her directorial debut, shows no aptitude for the medium whatsoever. Her direction is lackluster, a simplistic job that doesn't go much beyond pointing the camera and shooting. leave a comment
