Screenwriter Matt Dorff cheats while filling up this thriller's suspect pool, but the tension is consistent enough that it doesn't really matter. Far from soothing the savage breast, classical music incites a Philadelphia killer. Knowing that they're looking for a Mozart aficionado who's left multiple crime scenes with the radio dial to a classical music program hosted by Anne Winslow (Molly Ringwald), homicide cops Lou Heinz (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Sam Parks (Lynne Adams) focus their attention on the attractive disc jockey's social and professional circle. They soon discover that the victims were all unkind to Anna in some way or another — one was a media critic who panned her show, another the host of a rival station and so on. Winslow also has a bevy of admirers, including her technician, Ed (Edward Yankee); fellow on-air personality David Scott (Allan Fawcett); and music professor Richard Poe (Chris Mulkey). Both David and Richard want to make beautiful music with Anna, but Poe tries to force the issue and Anna's rejection turns him against her. As Lou sifts through evidence, he too falls for Anne's mellifluous tones, which enrages her homicidal admirer. When the station forces Anna to interview Poe at a live music event, her obsessive protector finally reveals himself. The eventual revelation of Winslow's stalker caps off a fairly suspenseful examination of fan mania. This crisp thriller benefits from its high-toned classical music background, which provides a cool contrast to the bedlam and helps keep viewers on edge. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
