REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
starstarstarstar
Depending on your sensibilities, you'll find Darren Aronofsky's visually dazzling adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr.'s grueling 1978 novel either hard to take or hard to take seriously. In any event, it's a wild ride and a worthy entry in the hallowed canon of drugsploitation flicks that already includes Reefer Madness and The Trip. With Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Academy-Award nominee Ellen Burstyn. Read the complete review for Requiem For A Dream

I'm a health teacher and am ...

Question: I'm a health teacher and am looking for some good movies about drug addiction or abuse. Do you have any suggestions?Answer: You don't say how old your students are, so I feel I should warn you that all these movies contain material that many people would consider unsuitable for younger teenagers. But frankly, the drug life is full of material that's unsuitable for younger teenagers, so that just goes with the territory. Please also be aware that this isn't a definitive list, but these are films that have stuck with me. These titles deal vividly with life as an addict: The Man With the Golden Arm (1955). It's old-fashioned, but it was a pioneering look at heroin addiction. Drugstore Cowboy (1989) Jesus' Son (2000) Requiem for a Dream (2000) The Panic in Needle Park (1971) Trainspotting (1996) The read more

Do you have any info on the ...

Question: Do you have any info on the episode of Lost that Darren Aronofsky is supposed to direct? Are all the castaways going to break into Charlie's heroin stash and run around the island stoned just like in Requiem for a Dream?

Answer: That joke was made already, Ray — and by me. Besides, it's a moot point. As EW.com reported last week, Darren had to back out due to family obligations; he and Rachel Weisz are about to have a baby.

Is there any truth to the ...

Question: Is there any truth to the rumor that Darren Aronofsky is going to direct an episode of Lost later this season? Answer: It certainly sounded that way when I asked Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse for a preview of the maverick filmmaker's episode during our interview last week. "I think the obvious thing that people are going to think is that he's going to do some big sort of tripped-out heroin thing [with Charlie]," says Damon, referring to Aronofsky's most celebrated work, the 2000 drug-addiction opus, Requiem for a Dream," but that's exactly what we are not going to do." (Who would think that? Oh, right. Me read more
