Legitimate theater star Leslie is on her way to seek advice from a friend after having just murdered her alcoholic husband on New Year's Eve. She wishes she had the entire year to live over again to prevent her from performing her evil deed. Lo and behold, her wish is granted, but things don't change at all as she finds her husband being shot once again. But she also discovers she wasn't the person to do the shooting; a friend who had just gone over the edge is the real killer. This was the screen debut of Basehart (VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA; MOBY DICK) after he won the New York Drama Critics award; he plays the poet friend who goes crazy and shoots husband Hayward. Why he goes crazy is never fully explained, which is one of the problems with this script; it is slack in areas of motivation. All other aspects are up to par in what could have been a nice little study of man's ability to control his fate. This was Eagle Lion's first try at a big-budget, all-star feature; it was a notable failure, due to the overacting of Hayward and the totally unsympathetic performance of Leslie, in her first film since a bitter, litigious altercation with Warner Bros. The film also marked the movie debut of musical-comedy star Venuta in a nonsinging, nondancing straight dramatic role. leave a comment
