Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, this better-than-average series western has government agent Starrett tracking down a gang that has been tearing down telegraph lines. The finger points at Bardette, a onetime a guerilla band leader. But the allegation is unfounded, and the real
culprits eventually are caught. The action is almost nonstop, with Burnette around for some comic relief. In 1949, the year RENEGADES OF THE SAGE was released, Magazine Enterprises began publishing a "Durango Kid" comic book. Durango's sidekick looked just like Smiley Burnette, but because the
comics could not use the name, the character was renamed Muley Pike.
