Bored, bored, bored by the explosions and nihilistic quips that litter the latest glossy Hollywood action picture? Wishing you were at a movie that involved no futuristic weaponry, no car chases and no by-the-book plot reversals and third-act revelations? Well, Eric Rohmer's 27th feature is the object lesson in being careful what you wish for: Defiantly unpolished and loosely structured, it's an all talk and no action look at the love lives of some dreary young Parisians. Rohmer is celebrated for his subtlety, but this rarefied piffle goes beyond understatement: It's the next best thing to a cinematic Rorschach test. A student (Clara Bellar) suspects her boyfriend (Antoine Basler) of cheating. A girl (Aurore Rauscher) begins a new affair before ending the old one. A painter (Michael Kraft) takes one girl (Veronika Johansson) to the Picasso museum and falls in love with another (Benedicte Loyen). The Eiffel Tower looms over each tale, none of which really goes anywhere. They all take their own sweet time not getting there, and each is preceded by an annoying French street singer caterwauling about l'amour. For those who find Cahiers du Cinema mandatory reading a la plage, this is the movie of the summer. leave a comment
