Effervescent, quirky comedy/whodunnit about a murder that takes place during a night of heavy drinking by a bunch of wealthy socialites, including Constance Cummings and Robert Young. It actually develops into a string of murders, all dealt with in sublimely light-hearted fashion. Edward Arnold plays a jovial detective who enlists the aid of a hypnotist (Gustav von Seyffertitz) to try and jog the memories of the hungover revellers; naturally enough, the hypnotist is himself dispatched just on the point of disclosure. This is screwball comedy-mystery at its strangest, with imaginatively outrageous gags, superb character players, and direction that perfectly blends parody and suspense. A film which neatly subverts the very conventions its genre employs, REMEMBER LAST NIGHT? was, not surprisingly, a cult favorite of the French New Wave. leave a comment
