A sitcom with pretty graphic sex, and that's not a criticism. Writer/director P.J. Castellaneta's feature debut is Friends plus people of color and gay/lesbian couples, or Will and Grace with cojones: The cast is charming, the kvetching is pretty funny, and the whole thing is just as cute and accessible as can be. At the center of the story is Tara (Jennifer Tilly), whose Venice, CA, home is the gathering place for her close-knit circle of lovelorn pals. Vincey (Mitchell Anderson) is a frustrated playwright who can't find a boyfriend. Sarina (Cynda Williams) has just broken up with longtime girlfriend Megan (Serena Scott Thomas) because Megan is having an affair with Jared (Billy Wirth) who, to add insult to masculinity, is Sarina's cousin ("Second cousin by marriage," Jared pleads in his own defense). Sarina in turn takes up with butch little Robin (Lori Petty), who's always loved her from afar. Vincey develops a crush on artist Buzz (T.C. Carson), only to lose him to Javi (Eddie Garcia), who's just learned that he's HIV positive. Javi's brother Gus (Timothy Paul Perez), Tara's boyfriend, wants to get away and travel, but Tara is hellbent on becoming pregnant. Rounding out the group are Dwight (Gibbs Tolsdorf) and Diego (Chris Cleveland), the handsome, upscale Christian couple everyone wants to hate for being so perfect but can't even get mad at because they're also so perfectly nice. The movie takes a rather startling turn midway through, when its viewer-friendly cheer is shattered by a vicious gay bashing and its aftermath, but to Castellaneta's credit the movie takes it in stride and keeps going. And old pros Seymour Cassell and Susan Tyrell contribute very funny cameos as Megan's parents: "What are we going to tell our friends at Pflag?" mom wails when Megan introduces the studly Jared. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
