An analytical film about a young researcher, Byrne, who is preparing a study on the life of Isaac Newton. He rents a summer cottage in Ireland where he plans to do his writing, but instead he becomes involved with the lives of the family with which he shares the estate--Flanagan, the hard-working wife of McCann, a lazy boozer; and their quiet son Cummins and attractive niece Walter. Byrne, who's normally as cold and scientific as Newton, becomes emotionally entangled with the clan. He and Walter begin an affair, although he has his sights on Flanagan. The approach of the filmmakers, however, is just as analytical as Newton and Byrne, resulting in a movie that defies emotional attachment. REFLECTIONS does contain some commendable performances, especially that of McCann. This fine Irish actor also appeared the same year as the troubled father in CAL. leave a comment
