Strictly for fans of automotive mayhem, this low-octane Australian THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS knock-off peels rubber through familiar action turf. Despite surveillance by Detectives Blondine DiMaggio (Vanessa Steele) and Peter Dasha (Warwick Young), Sydney based drag racer and sometime luxury car thief Sparky (Steve Bisley) manages to avoids the long arm of the law. Could Sparky have an ace in the hole at their precinct? DiMaggio and Dasha try to level the playing field by coercing a shifty crook, Jack Hand (Terry Serio), into infiltrating Sparky's gang. Meanwhile, Sparky orders his gang to deal with people who cross him by pinning them to garage walls with cars. Dangerous though Sparky is, his main squeeze, Carli (Allison Cratchley), is even more lethal; her job is to distract cops from Sparky's criminal activities. Closely monitored by the cops, Jack arranges to purchase a huge quantity of drugs from Sparky, unaware that Sparky has already figured out that Jack is in cahoots with the law. DiMaggio and Dasha risk with their careers to appropriate $8,000,000 from department coffers to legitimize Jack's deal and to nail Sparky, who in turn intends to fix Jack's wagon and grab the dope money right from under the cops' noses. What Sparky hasn't taken into consideration is Jack's ruthlessness: He's tied Carli to a bomb at the rendezvous point. Can Sparky rescue Carli and shake the cops long enough to dash after traitorous Jack? This stunt-laden action thriller offers vicarious thrills for would-be speed demons, but it's 100% free of sympathetic characters. The power play that pits low-lives and enforcers of the law delivers the expected thrills, spills and pit stops, but you've seen it all before. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
