RED | THREE COLORS: RED | TROIS COULEURS: ROUGE

The final section of director Krzysztof Kieslowski's THREE COLORS trilogy, RED shrewdly interweaves characters, themes, and plot threads from first two films, while telling a moving and clever tale of its own. In Geneva, a fashion model (Irene Jacob) accidentally hits a dog with her car, leading to an unusual friendship with its reclusive owner (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a retired judge who spies on his neighbors using an elaborate phone-tapping system. While RED lands tonally somewhere between the serious, enigmatic BLUE and the lighter but more eccentric WHITE, the three films together constitute a humanistic statement about the need for connection. Not an earth-shaking theme, to be sure, but this is art-house cinema of a very traditional kind, and its pleasures are familiar rather than compelling. Kieslowski, who announced an early retirement from filmmaking after the completion of RED, was nominated for the 1994 Best Director Oscar. leave a comment
