An international cast provided a sure-fire success in Europe and the Far East, but failed to evoke much excitement in the US. Based on a true story, Mifune plays the samurai who accompanies a Japanese ambassador bringing a jeweled, and symbolic, sword to be presented to the President. However, during the train ride, Bronson and Delon attack and steal the sword. But Delon double-crosses Bronson and then leaves. This motivates the teaming, amidst an air of cultural confusion, of Mifune and Bronson as they stalk Delon. Their search takes them to a brothel where the two men enjoy the favors of Andress and Capucine before catching up with Delon. A Comanche raid forces the three men to band together to fight the Indians, the sole survivor being Bronson, who returns the sword to the Japanese ambassador. Mifune and Bronson give the stoical performances that have made them actors of such great standing. Delon is horribly miscast as the villain, with Andress having only to look nice. The levels of tension and excitement provided by the story are never fully met under Young's direction. leave a comment
