RED SONJA plays sort of like a female Conan, and a bad one at that. Gedren (Sandahl Bergman) is an evil queen who kills Sonja's (Brigitte Nielsen) family then has her thugs rape the innocent young woman. Naturally a little revenge is in order, and, courtesy of a mystical vision, Sonja acquires extraordinary powers (as well as a sexy metal outfit). In return for these newfound qualities, Sonja promises to hang onto her virtue and proceeds with her mission. Eventually, after hooking up with a bratty prince (Ernie Reyes, Jr.) and his gargantuan assistant (Paul Smith), Sonja unites with Kalidor (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and discovers that he's just as handy with a sword as she. RED SONJA is, to say the least, a fairly silly film that unfortunately never really recognizes its own innate campiness. Sure, there are a few funny moments here and there with several obviously intended jokes, but director Richard Fleischer never milks the elements of self-parody for what they're worth. Schwarzenegger makes little more than a series of cameo appearances. leave a comment
