Recess

1967, Movie, NR, 90 mins

starstarstarstar
Based on an off-Broadway play, this picture uses the idea of children's recess at school to take a microcosmic look at almost everything that affects a person during his or her lifetime, including love, hate, religion, and politics. Starting with a background of only white, the film's set takes on various colors and shapes to depict the changes taking place for the characters during the recess period. By the end of the film, the players are still unable to touch each other--except for a touch to the forehead--perhaps representing how individual perspectives serve to separate people. Well acted by nonprofessionals and displaying high-caliber production values, RECESS won top honors at the 1969 Atlantic Film Festival. It was the first solo production project by Barnes, who had worked for several years with Otto Preminger as casting director and story editor. leave a comment
