Sentimental without being cloying, this second-chance drama focuses on issues facing upper middle class African-Americans. No-nonsense entertainment attorney Mac Sinclair (Tim Reid) is equally at home with his yuppie girlfriend, Glynis (Susan Fales-Hill), and the gangsta rappers he represents. Though this self-made man makes little time for relationships, he has a soft spot for his housekeeper, Jackie (Rosetta Devine). Bu the never imagines that agreeing to bail Jackie's niece, Cece (Tamara Curry), out of jail will rock his complacent existence in Richmond, Virginia. Cece's boyfriend, Blaze (Eugene Long), was the victim of racial profiling; she mouthed off and was arrested as well. Unfortunately for stuffy Mac, the judge rules that Cece's rehabilitation should begin at Mac's mansion; Mac agrees because he knows Jackie suffers from health problems. Cece proves a real handful who'd rather sing on street corners than plan for her future. But when Mac uses his connections to get Cece a gig as a back-up singer gig, she starts to lose the chip on her shoulder. Transforming Cece changes Mac's perspective about his own neighborhood roots; although Cece is trying to balance her new career goals with her loyalty to Blaze, his life is tied to the ghetto. Cece's loyalty is tested when a sexy record producer takes a personal interest in Cece's upward mobility, and after Glynis pitches in and give's Cece a head-to-toe makeover, Mac has to fight his own romantic feelings for his protegee. Will Mac allow this headstrong young woman to choose her own direction in life? Although Shirley Pierce and Tim Reid's screenplay is undermined by its obvious messages, the uniformly fine cast makes the cliches about finding one's place in the world seem almost new. This soapy exploration of music business personnel makes a valid case for valuing ideals instead of commercial success, and features several brisk original tunes. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
