Bill Murray takes the lead role of Larry Darrell (played by Tyrone Power in the 1946 original adaptation of Somerset Maugham's tale), an upper-class lad who isn't ready to settle down. Instead, he wants to learn about life, to find the path to salvation. He breaks off his engagement to Isabel (Catherine Hicks), says farewell to friends Gray (James Keach) and Sophie (Theresa Russell), and sets out on a journey that will take him through the trenches of WW I, the Himalayas of India, and Paris. While not as compelling as its 1946 predecessor (John Byrum's direction is unfocused, and Murray's acting is somewhere between complex and goofy), this version of The Razor's Edge, with a script cowritten by Murray, still manages to make a potent statement about the effect of war. For Larry, the experience of death and suffering proves the catalyst that sets him on his journey of self-discovery. The film was a pet project of Murray's and went before the cameras only because of his bartering power. His selling point to Columbia executives was simple--he would do GHOSTBUSTERS only if they let him do THE RAZOR'S EDGE. leave a comment
