RAZOR BLADE SMILE | PURE VAMP
starstarstarstar
Dedicated to the memory of exploitation favorite David Warbeck, who died shortly after completing his part as a forensic expert, and apparently costumed out of a rubber-fetish catalogue, this low-budget UK vampire/action picture rips along on a rush of cheesy pulp adrenaline. Lilith Silver (Eileen Daly) was born into undeath in 1850 when jaded, 1000-year-old aristocrat Sir Sethane Blake (Christopher Adamson) killed her lover and turned Lilith into a vampire like himself. Some 160 years later, she's still dead and well and living in London, funding her eternal life of sex and kicks by working as a paid assassin. But her latest gig turns out to be more troublesome than she anticipated: the paranoid millionaire she just killed was part of a secret Illuminati cabal, and his cohorts aren't taking his death lying down. They find a witness to the killing, put hardboiled Inspector Blake (Jonathan Coote) on her trail and kidnap her partner and sometime lover Platinum (Kevin Howarth); it should come as no surprise that the villainous Sir Sethane is a big part of the mix. Writer-director Jake West's debut is a flashy, trashily entertaining revisionist vampire picture (Lilith devotes a good bit of her time to explaining the ways and wiles of vampires, debunking popular myths with a toothy sneer) that delivers equal parts vinyl-clad cheesecake, high-velocity gun play and squishy neck biting. Star Daly, whom sleaze fans will recognize as the face of Redemption Video, wears her figure-hugging outfits well; she can't act, but acting is hardly the point. The production is beautifully designed and the action scenes are nicely handled. It's all pretty empty, but good fun if you're a genre fan and are in the right mood. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
