Raven's End

Berggren, a factory worker with literary aspirations, hopes to escape from Raven's End, a slum district in the Swedish city of Malmo. However, his meager earnings and those of his beleaguered washerwoman mother, Storm, go to support the lifestyle of his alcoholic father, Hjelm, who views himself as too cultured to accept employment as a common worker. Berggren's first novel is rejected by a publisher, albeit with some encouraging words. Disconsolate, he turns to a young neighbor girl for "sympathy."
