RATATOUILLE
starstarstarstar
A common country rat who dreams of becoming a world-class Parisian chef is the unlikely hero of this utterly charming animated fable from Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles). There's a lot of plot for a simple movie about an epicurean rodent, but everything builds to a wonderful Proustian moment of recovered memory and sensory bliss that captures the essence of culinary art while serving as the high point of a clever, ingeniously film filled with many shining moments. Ratatouille Cooks Up Best Reviews of 2007

RottenTomatoes.com's Golden Tomato Awards, which single out the pics that have gotten the best reviews, have put on a pedestal both Ratatouille and the Irish musical Once (in the limited release and musical categories). Also being lauded are Atonement (best romance), The Bourne Ultimatum (best action/adventure movie) and Juno (best comedy). The Moldy Tomato, which is hurled at the worst-reviewed pic of the year, went to Because I Said So. Yeah, I don't remember that one, either. Thank you, merciful amnesia. — Ben Katner read more

Ratatouille Scurries to the Top, and Other DVD News

Ratatouille topped last week's DVD sales chart, while I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry was the No. 1 rental pick. My sons checked out the Rat last week, but weren't wowed by it. "Too many damn frogs in this film," scoffed Jared, who with Jacob turned 5 on Tuesday.Elsewhere, DVD releases have been set for The Bourne Ultimatum (Dec. 11), Resident Evil: Extinction (Jan. 1), Barney & Friends: Celebrating Around the World (Jan. 29, 2008) and Perfect Strangers: The Complete First and Second Season (Feb. 28) — and yes, I shall be ridiculous, thank you. read more

Box Office: Pixar Rat Bests John McClane

Ratatouille topped the weekend box office with a $47.2 million debut, yet fell shy of the $50-65 million opening that experts had estimated. What's more, it was Pixar's smallest bow since 1998's A Bug's Life, and is on pace to be the studio's third straight project to underperform its predecessor.Coming in second was Bruce Willis and the Mac guy's Live Free or Die Hard, which took in $33.2 mil for the weekend (and $48.2 mil dating back to its Wednesday debut). Rounding out the top five were Evan Almighty ($15.1 mil), 1408 ($10.6 mil) and Fantastic Four 2 ($9 mil).Michael Moore's Sicko opened at No. 9 (with $4.5 mil) while the estrogen-tastic Evening bowed in the 10 spot with $3.5 mil. read more
