RASCAL is the delightful autobiographical story of young Sterling North (Mumy) and a pet raccoon, aptly named Rascal, which the boy saves from the jaws of a lynx. The film is set in the summer of 1918 in northern Wisconsin, where the boy lives with his widowed father, often away on business. Sterling and Rascal entertain each other, and they manage to get into a fair amount of mischief. At the end of the summer the two must part company for good, but the boy feels better about saying goodbye knowing that Rascal now has a female raccoon to watch over him. This very simple depiction of a past era manages to be warmhearted without wallowing in sentiment. The reassuring narration by Walter Pidgeon, as the voice of the adult Sterling, helps guide viewers along. leave a comment
